Our History

Io Communications was established in August of 1983 when its two principals Jeffrey Mills and Barbara Mills, graduates of UT’s Radio-Televiosn-Film program, left their respective media jobs (Indie Film Co., NASA) to launch a video production comany. And what an auspicious date…Hurricane Alicia would hit two days later.

Thirty-nine years later, we are still standing, with a wide array of experience beginning in corporate communications, adding motion graphics, and then after filing for our 501(3)(c) in 2004 embarking on independent documentary production.

Along the way we’ve learned many skills, the most important of which is: Listen

Listen to our client's needs, listen to our hearts when we know soemething isn’t working,
and listen to schedules—there’s always a good reason for them.

It’s been fun too. We’ve built long friendships with crews and clients, enjoyed the places we’ve been able to travel to, and have been educated and enriched by the projects we have tackled.

What We Do.

CORPORATE

Corporate production is at our roots. With multiple-decade relationships with companies like Chevron, Panhandle Eastern, Freeport LNG, Compaq/HP and Lone Star College, we have enjoyed production partnerships that have contributed to their growth and prosperity.

DOCUMENTARY

Documentaries have been a passion of ours. Not only have we applied the doc style for our corporate clients, but our personal interests have found homes in films about the era of movie palaces (Interstate Theaters), the birth of commercial aviation (Pan Am), the Texas frontier (Terlingua), and the impact of global warming (Calming the Waters). We also colaborate with other doc producers and have shepherded the films The Zentenos: A Musical Legacy and MoonShot: The Remarkable Journey of Apollo Chamber Players. Little Grouse on the Prairie, and Palace of Justice.

FUNDRAISING

As a specialized application of the documentary style, we have produced many fundraising videos to help other nonprofits raise money: Houston Audubon, Houston Area Parkinsons Society, Pro-Vision Academy, Barrio Dogs, and Reach Unlimited.
